What happens when you mix Cirque du Soleil with Bob Fosse? You get Pippin on Broadway.
I’m not sure that having a circus troop tell the tale of Charlemange’s son makes any sense. At least there is a unifying story, unlike Fosse’s Chicago.
Pippin’s quest for meaning includes parts which were exciting and entertaining. And, then there was the trapeze sex and the orgy in a cage. It’s an interesting but ultimately exhausting bag of tricks. I am glad that I saw Patina Miller, Andrea Martin and Matthew James Thomas before the cast changes. And, there were plenty of Jazz Hands.
Considering I have seen several Broadway productions this season, my favorite is still Kinky Boots. It’s easily the best musical of the year!
