Day 2 at New York Comic Con brought the David Tennant Spotlight. Tennant is a seasoned pro with many Comic Cons under his belt unlike Ewan McGregor. Event though he also could not talk about any TV or film projects as a result of the ongoing Actor’s Strike, Tennant was firmly in control of the audience. Honestly, he could make reading a menu entertaining.
Tennant started with his favorite NY food – an overstuffed bagel over New York cheesecake and pizza. That was a good 15-minutes right there and the audience loved it!
As a long time 10th Doctor fan, I was surprised to learn that Tennant was not his real name. He was born David John McDonald and when he applied at age 16 to Equity (the UK version of the Screen Actor’s Guild), he was denied because there was already a David McDonald. After two more failed tries, he was inspired to use David Tennant due to Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys.
Tennant was very excited about his next project, Macbeth at London’s Donmar Warehouse. He has already starred as Richard II, Romeo and Hamlet. But, at one point, the audience had to point out Tennant’s untied shoelace on his Air Jordans. That lead to another riff on how his laces never stay tied.
There were a couple of points when the audience yelled about the Doctor or Good Omens. Tennant responded with locked lips and “Come on SAG!”.
Lots of picture to see including shots of the shoelace, all taken with the Canon R7 and the Canon RF 70-200mm.
