Canon R5 Mark II – Day One

Spread the love

Here are some photos from my first day with the new Canon r5 Mark II.  All photos taken with the new Canon RF 200mm-800mm lens.

Some quick notes:

  1. Canon has an online manual for the Canon R5 Mark II here.
  2. The new LP-E6P takes about 2.5 hours to charge with the Canon LC-E6 Charger.  Battery life seems pretty good.  Battery life is terrible!  I burned through a full battery with 600 photos.  I did use a lot of previews waiting for the money shot.  The R5 has much better battery life with the old battery.
  3. The Eye Control is not reliable if you wear glasses.  Also, the camera has an issue if you are not looking in the same position which was recorded in the set-up.  I was panning with a monopod, and turned quickly on an angle to follow the bird.  The Eye Tracking did not track correctly and lost the shot.  I turned it off.
  4. This camera is FAST!!! The High-speed continuous shooting (H+) with the Electronic Shutter is insane!  I didn’t realize that the camera comes set to this mode.  I tried taking a simple photo and heard this insane whine.  It was 30 shots before I realized what was going on. 🙂
  5. Very fast, accurate focusing and better pan tracking than the Canon R5.  The R7 has better pan tracking than the R5, but the R5II is even better.
  6. The new AI Focus is pretty interesting.  It automatically rotates between AF modes to match the subject and setting.  Flips between Eye tracking, Spot Tracking and Zone Tracking instantly.
  7. HDR composite in the R5 was replaced by HDR PQ Raw files in the R5II.
  8. Use your Favorites to build quick setting.  There are a lot of menus.  I spent at least 5-minutes in the field flipping through menus trying to find the section to turn off the Eye Control.
  9. Lightroom supports the RAW and cRAW files from the Canon R5 Mark II!!
  10. The exposure setting are very good! These photos needed very few tweaks in Lightroom.
  11. Noise level is pretty good. Shot at 10,000ISO by accident and produced good results in Lightroom.
  12. Very happy so far. More to come.
